God’s characteristics are unchanging because He is unchanging. Hebrews 13:8 says, “He (God) is the same yesterday, today and forever.” There are so many characteristics of God that amaze me. One of those is that because He is unchanging, He is annoying at times. His annoying love NEVER stops chasing you. He will not leave you alone. He is determined to reach you even if it is through good, bad, or devastating circumstances.
The Old Testament book of Judges has a recurring theme. Israel, God’s people, would do evil (violate their created purpose) and stray away from relationship with God, so God would allow their enemies to subject them to captivity. After being oppressed they would remember God, and they would cry out to Him for help. When that cry finally came from a place of genuineness and regret for putting other things in front of Him, He would send a deliverer and free them. This cycle repeats over and over and over again.
Many have come to the point of having what they think is everything in life but yet they remain empty. NFL players are committing suicide, singers are abusing drugs to numb the pain, porn stars are jumping off balconies and shooting themselves because of the mass amount of emptiness that consumes their lives behind the mask of what seems glamorous. We cannot deny that humanity is broken. We need to embrace our designed purpose again. Even King Solomon, one of the wealthiest kings ever, said this in Ecclesiastes chapter two: “I increased my achievements. I built houses and planted vineyards for myself. I made gardens and parks for myself and planted every kind of fruit tree in them…I amassed gold and silver for myself…I became great and surpassed all who were before me in Jerusalem. All that my eyes desired, I did not deny them. I did not refuse myself any pleasure…when I considered all that I had accomplished and what I had labored to achieve, I found everything to be worthless and a pursuit of the wind. ”
We must realize that without God everything is meaningless because He is what gives meaning. He loves you enough to allow devastating things to happen because of the chance you might turn back to Him. Pain is a necessary and good thing at times because it indicates that there is a problem. Doctors tell us that this is true for physical pain from injury or illness, but it is also true for injury to our relationship with God.
God knows and is trying to get us to understand that ultimately, the sum of life is to live a life in connection with Him. History is “His-Story.” None of us can escape this fact. He created us; He defines us; He gives us our worth and value. Apart from Him ALL of the things in this life are meaningless. God is and will be relentlessly in pursuit of you from now until the day you take your last breath. He is willing to invade your life daily at the risk of annoying you. His still small voice will ring in your ears every single day because He is madly in love with you.
Hebrews 3:15 says, “Today when you hear His voice, don’t harden your hearts as Israel did when they rebelled.” You see, God sent a final deliverer in Jesus to spiritually free us. He is the way, the truth and the life. Apart from Him the only thing left is everlasting separation from the One who gave you life. I for one am glad God annoyed me through life in order to get my attention, to free me, heal me and ultimately fulfill me. Jesus, I love You.
