The Art Club at Grassfield High School had an opportunity this year to do something out of the ordinary.  They volunteered their time and talents to paint ceiling tiles for the Greenbrier Dental Center in Chesapeake.

The idea of painting the ceiling tiles for the dentist’s office occurred to the club’s sponsor, Jay McCraw, when he was at the dentist’s office getting his six-month checkup.  “When I leaned back in the chair during my appointment,” says McCraw, “I saw a stain on the ceiling and mentioned that my classroom’s ceiling was full of painted ceiling tiles and asked if they wanted a few for their ceiling.  They said that they’d love some.”

He presented the idea to the members of the Art Club to see if this was a project they wanted to tackle.  The response was yes, they would paint the tiles.  McCraw recommended the students base the ceiling tiles on well-known works of art, but give them a dental twist.  A few students even threw their own ideas into the mix.

The students recreated works of Michelangelo, Leonardo Da Vinci, Vincent van Gogh, and Salvador Dalí, all with a dental spin to them.  “It’s so much fun!” says student and artist Autumn Moroney.  Many of the students who participate in Art Club painted a ceiling tile for the dental center’s pediatric treatment rooms.
